Sport of Kings

Today I went to my first polo match! You'd think that since horses are essentially my life and I happen to live ten minutes from a horse show facility that also has a huge polo field, that I would have been to a polo game before.

West World of Scottsdale hosted the Scottsdale Polo Championships which consisted of 3 different matches. We purchased tail gating tickets and parked along one side of the field. I don't really know a lot about polo except that basically they hit the ball toward a goal.

Mostly, I just enjoyed the crazy weirdness that I saw, the fun people and beautiful horses. And the booze. There was lots and lots of booze....

This is me pretending to be Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, except,
ya know, for the prostitution part..

The horses get up close and personal...

The very cute boys parked next to us.
Mary and Katie

A random stray wandered in and drank with us for awhile..
More ponies

More me, because aren't all bloggers narcissistic?
Yum

Not sure about this outfit...

More pony action

We're responsible, right?

We had so much fun today! I'm ready to do it again soon! Hope everyone is having a nice weekend so far!

Memorial Monday

Happy Memorial Day and a sincere thank you to the men and women that defend our country. Your service is truly appreciated.

I got up early today and did a 4 mile run before going to the barn, making that a total of 18 miles run over the holiday weekend. Woot!

Feet are tired!
I ran by my high school (class of '94!) and decided to take a picture.

Once I made it back to my neighborhood, I realized that someone had put little flags all along the street, each one a block apart. Pretty cool.

I also spotted this little gem. I've never noticed it before. It's propped up against a palm tree in the front yard of this house. I'm sure the home owners thought I was some sort of weird creeper when I stopped to take a picture.

Afterward, I headed out to the barn for a Memorial Day trail ride. I haven't taken Bam Bam on a trail ride on months, so I decided to give him a break in training and head out into the desert.

Lara and Frango on the left, Bam and me on the right. The horse in front is Jackson...
about 2 minutes before he exploded and got a little wild!
BBR & me, Sarah & Jackson, and Stacie & Eddie
The horses got themselves worked up so we really had no other choice but to drink beer once we made it back to the barn.

Refreshing!
I caught up on my CD burning project. I made a few CDs. This took all weekend. Doesn't seem like it would take so long!

Yep, I  hand wrote all of that!

A friend of mine posted this on my Facebook page. She knows me so well!

So, yeah, all in all, it was a pretty productive and fun weekend. Cheers!

Super Sunday

Busy day! I started out with the a 3 mile run around the neighborhood. Usually, the weather is so much hotter than it has been this weekend, so I'm taking full advantage of the cooler temps. Because I'm running so slowly right now, running has actually become fun again. I'm even considering go out again tonight just because at this pace, my body doesn't feel trashed all of the time.

I went out to the barn, where Bam Bam the wonder pony was a awesome today! I switched horses with one of the other women in the barn. Her horse, Jackson, is so fun to ride and Bam Bam showed her how to do a big extended trot (even though he is little).

I spent several hours last night burning music that I've promised for several people. Have I mentioned how much I love Of Monsters and Men? Why, yes, I believe I have. My friend, Sarah, informed me that they are playing here on Wednesday. Anyone want to go?

This is my current favorite song. Sadly, this song strikes a little close to home, but then everyone has felt this way at some point in time. I'm loving it anyway. I'm sappy like that.

Maybe I'm a crook for stealing your heart away
And maybe I'm a crook for not caring for it
And maybe I'm a bad, bad, bad, bad person
Well, baby, I know

And these fingertips, they'll never run through your skin
Those bright blue eyes can only meet mine across a room
Filled with people that are less important than you

Because you love, love, love when you know I can't love

You love, love, love when you know I can't love
You love, love, love when you know I can't love you.¦

So I think it's best we both forget before we dwell on it
The way you held me so tight all through the night
It was near morning

Because you love, love, love when you know I can't love
You love, love, love when you know I can't love
You love, love, love when you know I can't love you.

Gah. Depressing? Yes.

But, I'm seriously in love with this band. I love their sound and their lyrics. I need to figure out a way to see them on Wednesday! I may kidnap Tara and force her to see them with me!
Edit: I just bought tickets! Woot! Yes, I will be getting a shirt!

Derby Day...and movies.

Today is the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby. Now I'm not a huge horse racing fan despite the fact that a huge percentage of my clientele works Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, Los Alamitos and Del Mar. There are a lot of things that happen on the back side of the race track that I don't agree with. However, I try to tune in for the Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes - the three races that make up the Triple Crown of horse racing.

I think that the most exciting race I've ever watched was when Mine That Bird won the KY Derby in 2009. Today's winner was I'll Have Another who was in second until the very end, passing Bodemeister who had been in the lead from the first turn of the backstretch, in the last 100 yards. So the ending was cool, but meh. Not a very exciting race this year.

I also went shopping for new breeches today because we have a little mini clinic at our barn tomorrow and I needed a nicer pair of breeches than the pair that I am currently wearing.

I gave myself last night off from working out and went to go see The Five Year Engagement instead.

Slight Spoilers (and my own sad opinion) Below....

Emily Blunt: 'Five Year Engagement' Trailer & Poster!
It was cute and I liked it, but it also depressed me. It has a good ending, so don't worry about that, but they really struggle to find happiness. When we think of being in love, we always think of gooey, silly excitement but in reality, that part only lasts a little while. Then real life happens and I think this movie did a pretty good job of showing how even the nicest of people struggle in relationships.

I guess that's what I liked about this movie: the realness of it. Too often Hollywood tells love stories that are extremely dramatic such as war time romance, etc, but this movie is about a regular couple that tries to make each other happy, but neither of them are. I guess that might have been why I found it a little depressing.

The cast is really good and there's a lot of comedy, but like Bridesmaids, there's an underlying sadness about everything.

Maybe it's just me, but it's one thing when one part of the couple is a douchebag and things are rough, but it's another when both people are good people and they're still unhappy.

It must be love if our relationship has lasted longer than the life cycle of a first generation Apple product.
I'm probably not the best one to listen to, though, because I'm the only one I know that found the underlying theme of Bridesmaids to be sad. Everyone else thought it was hilarious.

Okay, I've procrastinated enough. I need to take a nap so I can pound out six miles after the sun goes down...
