About Me

Hi! My name is Jaime and I started this blog to try and keep myself motivated.

I'm lazy, I will admit it. If anyone told me that I would not only finish a half marathon, but do it several times, I would have laughed my ass off at that person. I ran my first half marathon at Disneyland in 2010 and I keep signing up for more because I most likely wouldn't keep running otherwise. ( And I like medals. I can admit it.)

Races are pretty much about having fun...

The original Unlikely Competitor is my wonder pony, Bam Bam Rubble. I swear he has world champion bloodlines on both sides but he has absolutely no love for the events for which he was bred. So instead, we competed in Dressage, for which he is the wrong breed and build.

Sadly, the original Unlikely Competitor, Bam Bam Rubble, recently had to be retired. Physical limitations due to TMJ surgery when he 3 forced him into an early retirement. He's living the good life on a ranch playing with kids all day now. I had always planned to write a book about him one day titled, The Unlikely Competitor, but I had to let go of a few of the dreams I had for him once his career was forced into an early ending.

I now have a wonderful new project, Louie. Louie also falls into the "unlikely competitor" category because he is the same breed as Bam and not entirely suited for dressage, but he has the best brain of any of the horses I've had. I absolutely adore him. I decided buy him because anything fancier with that kind of brain is way out of my price range. To buy something fancy in my price range means sacrificing temperament or soundness and I wasn't really willing to do either.

He's still pretty darn nice, so I'm exciting to see where this partnership leads. Luckily, he's a little more suitable for dressage than Bam Bam, so maybe I might get to write my book one day after all. We'll see.

2012 was supposed to be the year that I tackled my first full marathon. I already knew that I probably wouldn't be doing a bunch of full marathons, so I wanted my first to really count and what better race than NYC Marathon?  I signed on with a charity, trained all summer, raised $5000 for Team Chances, flew to NYC only to have the NYC Marathon canceled while I was on my way to the expo.

I still have every intention of one day crossing the finish line of the NYC Marathon, but as of this posting, NYRR has not announced how they will accommodate the 2012 runners, so we shall see how that evolves.

This is as close as I was able to get to crossing the
finish line this time, but I'll be back!

Next up is Goofy Challenge 2013 in January. I'm a little scared that now my first full marathon will take place the day after running a half marathon, but I'm just going to do my best and see what happens.

I've met incredible people through running and blogging and it never hurts to meet more, so drop me a line or ask me a question!

Happy running!

  2. Stumbled upon your blog today while doing a search for the disney coast to coast marathon challenge medal. Spent a bit of time reading about your running habits. Very motivational. Glad there are others out there doing the same things as me. I'm in the same boat as you, signing up for races in the future keeps me motivated. I'm a bit of a medal whore too. I've got my first half-marathon medal and now I just want more. Hope you don't mind that I'm following your blog.
