Injuries and Candy... I Haz Both

I've managed to hurt myself. I somehow managed to strain a muscle that is in a weird place. I think it's my quadricep but it hurts into my inner thigh. It's in such a weird place, that it's really hard to even stretch it out. I have to put my leg up on a step (or on my desk at work, even though my boss doesn't appreciate that) and lean into it to feel it stretch at all.

I'm assuming it's my quad because my inner thigh muscles are crazy strong. I've ridden horses competitively since I was 11, so it's weird that the inside of my thigh hurts. Even though I have a nice protective layer of blubber on my thighs, I swear I'm not exaggerating when I say that I can do the thigh machine at the gym on the highest setting.


The stuff of nightmares.

PSA: If you lift 200lbs on the thigh machine at the gym, it tends to frighten potential boyfriends. I don't think they are seeking women that can crush their skulls with their thighs.

It doesn't hurt to ride, either, but it hurts to walk, much less run. Suckola.

In other news, I'm trying to cut out sugar. I've made it 2 days and my coworkers are paying the price. Since I don't like black coffee, I'm trying to substitute hot tea. It's keeping me from completely losing my mind, but it's not nearly as satisfying as coffee with hazelnut creamer. I've been terrorizing my office like Godzilla. I'm hoping this passes soon, because it is not making me popular.

I think this sums up my behavior quite well.

There's candy all over my office and I'm seriously feeling like an meth addict that can't stop. I figure cutting it out for a bit would probably be beneficial. Also, I'm learning that nutrition should only be discussed with certain individuals much like politics and religion. I also warn that the more research one does, the more frightening most of American foods become. There's ingredients in American food that's not even legal in Europe. Because it makes people sick! The problem is that unless you're able to afford shopping exclusively at Whole Foods or local organic markets, how is anyone supposed to cut all the processed crap out of their lives?

What the...?

Has anyone else done a lot of research on illness and food? I'm curious what others think...

  1. I was going to start cutting back on the sugar. Seriously. I had only dark chocolate left and was rationing it to myself. Then my class came back after Spring Break like 21 little tornadoes and I stopped and bought two bags of chocolate eggs to keep in my desk. It's better than having a drink every night...right? Right?

    I don't know what to tell you about the information out there on nutrition. Between the people trying to sell you stuff, and the celebrities with their trends that they claim are healthy, and the anecdotal "science" on the web, how do you know? I think the bottom line is the best things you can eat are things that grow, and in the closest form to their growth as possible. I read Salt, Sugar, Fat not too long ago and I was really surprised at how un-natural the foods sold as natural foods are. Things like juice made from concentrate are really just juices that are processed to the point where everything BUT the sugar is gone. Then they put in artificial flavors. It's crazy!

    Totally agree on nutrition being in the politics and religion category. Some people have very interesting and slightly scary views!

    1. Orange juice has as much sugar in it as soda! I absolutely think that we should be eating things as close to their natural form as possible. But I also love eating, and I certainly don't get as excited about a bowl of veggies as I do about a bowl of candy.

  2. Jinx!! I'm totally starting to cut out sugar, too. . . although, the 2 sugars that go in my coffee in the morning will stay. I hear blending coconut oil and cinnamon in the coffee is yummy?
    When I say sugar, I really mean the carbs like bread and pasta and bagels in the morning and afternoon snacking.

    There is a documentary coming out talking about just that called Fed Up (Katie Couric is involved), I saw Forks over Knives as well. . . there's a bunch of stuff out there about how terrible American food/ diet is. It's depressing.

    1. I definitely feel better today after 3 days of no sugar, but this ain't easy. Not to mention the headache I had for 2 straight days whiles I detoxes off of it. Good grief.

      I'll have to check out those documentaries. I'm sure they are interesting...and will freak me out even more about what we eat. ;)

  3. So sorry to hear you are injured. Not fun when you can't run and you are trying to cut out sugar too. There are way to many preservatives in our food, but I just can't say no to peanut M &M's and ice cream!

  4. Oh man, I could take this as a sign that I should really cut out sugar, or I could wish you luck and proceed to stuff my face. I might go with option B at least for the next week and then I'll think some more about cutting out sugar. Good luck!!! I tend to be an emotional eater and I need to learn that food is not my friend. I'm with you on black coffee - I need milk and some sort of sugar to make it tolerable.
