Registration Psychosis

All of the runDisney fans know that today was regular registration for Marathon Weekend 2018 at Disney World. There was a lot of hoopla about this race weekend, because it happens to be the 25th anniversary of the WDW Marathon and the 5th anniversary of the Dopey Challenge. After having a great time this year during the marathon, I decided I would register for 2018 and also register for the 10K, which I also did this year. It worked out perfectly because I used the 10K as a last training run but had a day off before the full. I planned to do the same again for next year.

But then you know what happens....suddenly your social media feeds are full of everyone planning on Dopey because then you're in for two anniversaries. I ran the 20th anniversary of the full as part of Goofy in 2013. I can't believe it's already time for the 25th!

I also very clearly remember crying after crossing the finish line and stating that I would never do it again. Of course, I developed race amnesia by the time I got to the Orlando airport and claimed I would probably do Goofy during some anniversary weekend.

But this was before there was an official Dopey Challenge.

Then after doing several race weekends, I swore off challenges. At least for awhile.

Suddenly, this morning, with just over an hour before registration I went into some sort of race psychosis, where I suddenly wanted to sign up for Dopey. Not really because I wanted to do Dopey, but because what if I wanted to do it later and it was sold out?!

I even had to consult my trusty friend, Abby, to talk me out of being stupid. I was having a pretty severe case of FOMO.

Luckily, I came back to reality and stuck with my original plan of doing the 10K and the full. Also, I was signing my mom up for the 10K and it was pretty crazed trying to race against the clock to get it all done, but I needn't have worried. It is now three and a half hours since registration opened and nothing is sold out. Not even the 5K. That's a pretty good indicator that the glory days of runDisney are waning.

I just hope we get something cool for the full marathon anniversary like the halfers got luggage tags this year for the Half That Never Happened. We only got a button for the 20th anniversary of the full. Boo.

Who else signed up for marathon weekend?

  1. After doing WDW, I didn't think I'd want to do it again, but here we are. If not for the timing, I'd probably join you.
I think you might be right about Run Disney on the wane.
I signed up for the Disneyland 10K, thinking I wanted to take part in the fun, but it's always so hot that weekend that I'd skip the half. Then I had second thoughts later on. There were slots open for the double dare, so I called to see what's involved in changing.
They want a $45 fee on top of the registration fees to make the change. I said no thank you. If they want to go back to the registration madness they had a few years ago, they're going to have to stop limiting participants to millionaires.

  2. I really thought about doing either the marathon or half in 2018 since now it will be an anniversary year for both, but I realized that it may be more about the hype than me really wanting to run. Although I really feel the need to shave 3 minutes off my marathon time but don't know that I'm ready to go through all that training again just yet. Glad you stuck with your gut!
