Friday Five: Things I Love About Race Day

I'm taking the plunge and doing my first blog link up. I'm apologizing in advance if I commit a link up faux pas! Someone please let me know if I do, so I can cry myself to sleep rectify my mistake!

Two of the blogs I religiously follow, We Run Disney and Fairytales and Fitness, participate in the Friday Five linkup the girls from DC- Mar, Cynthia, and Courtney.

Today's link up is Five Things I Love About Race Day. And I've got lots o' pictures!

1.) Travel

I know not every race requires travel, but I do love a good racecation. I don't tend to travel for anything less than a half marathon, so the excitement of the race in addition to being on vacation is really fun.

Plus, I can then justify vacation food and wine.

2.) Meeting up with friends.

Asics Tweet up during the New York City Marathon

Since becoming a blogger, I have met some really cool people. Some I have actually met in person and some I hope to meet in the future. There is a commraderie that exists among runners, especially those that use social media.

3.) The Scenery

Extraterrestrial Midnight Run at Area 51 in 2012

It's always fun to run in a new location. The miles tick by faster when you have new things to look at.

Plus, it's not too often you get to see a bunch of fairy tale princes just hanging around.

Why, hello there.

4.) Costumes and Outfits

I always have intentions of putting together a costume for Disney races, but it usually ends up pretty half assed. I love seeing everyone else's costumes, however.

5.) Medals

I certainly don't mind getting a prize after a long run! I'm not as medal crazy as I used to be, but let's be real. I still enjoy getting one and I'm certainly not turning it down!

So, that's my Friday Five! What are your favorite race day things?

  1. Aww, thanks for the mention! So, that area 51 race that you mentioned, well that was the race that had me terrified to do a night race. My friend ran that and ended up getting sick and a migrane from the strobe lights and being in the dark I guess.. That was the only race she DNF. I did however end up doing TOT and RnR vegas, both night races and I survived! -M

    1. Honestly, I don't remember any strobe lights. We were in the middle of NOWHERE and it was a really a strange experience. We got no sleep beforehand because we happened to have a room in Vegas next to the pool rave that went on all damn day. I would actually like to do this race again because it was like no race I've ever done, but this time, I'd pick a different hotel.

  2. I ran the Dumbo Dare in 2013, and I wore the exact same thing. Ha!

The medals, I'm still medal obsessed. My husband wants to do 10 Rock N Rolls to get all of the bonus medals, like the huge "10" medal. It's like five pounds, I swear.

    1. RnR gives out a ton of bonus medals, plus they're catching on to the Disney race challenges, so there's extra medals at each race if you do their challenges. 10 in one year would be quite and accomplishment!

  3. That picture on the bridge with NYC behind you is the best selfie ever!

  4. Thanks for including us Jamie. It's funny, when I read your comment about not caring as much about the medals, I laughed, because I feel the very same way. My Boston medal is getting a special hanger and will be all on it's own, but the rest just don't seem that important. Can't wait to get a photo on the bridge this fall. I need to go reread your NYC marathon recap!

    1. If I had a Boston medal, is have a shrine. Lol!

My NYC Marathon medal is on my mantle, but all the others are hanging on a coat rack. I get more excited by other swag these days, like a good tech shirt.

  5. Yay for you trying something new!! The NYC selfie is awesome!! I'm still all about the medals, even though half of mine (or more) are sitting in a box. I love seeing a new city by running through it.
